Heritage-listed archaeological site
and open-air museum

Roots dating back thousands of years

Indigenous groups have been hunting, fishing, and gathering here since the dawn of time. Pabos is an adaptation of the Mi’kmaq term “Pabok”, which means “still waters”.

Since the 1700s, the area has been part of the Route de la Morue (Cod Route). Fishermen from the Basque Country stopped here to rest, stock up on supplies, and dry their catch on the barachois.
The seigneury of Grand-Pabos and the history of its inhabitants have left their mark on the development of New France, the Gaspé, and Quebec. In a breathtakingly preserved and protected corner of the country, our open-air museum reveals how the lifestyles of indigenous people, Basque fishermen, 18th-century seigneurs and settlers, as well as British soldiers, shaped the future.

Pierre Nadon’s discoveries

Once heritage-listed and protected, the site can be duly explored. From 1981 to 1987, renowned Quebec archaeologist Pierre Nadon (1939–2002) led four excavation campaigns on the Grand-Pabos archaeological site, during which he unearthed over 8,500 artifacts from all periods of its occupation, as well as the remains of several buildings typical of the fishing posts and seigneuries of New France.

Thanks to his colossal efforts, the maritime seigneury of Pabos is the only New France fishery to have been showcased in the Gaspé region and is the best interpreted.
